Why Bother?
It’s not a crime for a vegetarian to miss meat.
Lucky for us, in the last 20 years the options available for vegetarians have grown immensely. There is a vegetarian substitute for almost any meat product available. But why bother?
For one thing, meat substitutes are a great source of protein. Most carnivores never have to worry about getting enough protein in their diet, but it is something that vegetarians must be more aware of. It’s possible for a person to meet all of their nutritional needs through a well-balanced plant-based diet, but fake meat products provide an easy and accessible protein source for vegetarians.
Also, many vegetarians still have occasional cravings for their old favorite dishes. Hamburgers or hot dogs cooked on the grill. A hearty pot pie with chunks of beef. Chicken noodle soup. Any number of dishes that just aren’t quite the same without the meat. Instead of wrestling with their cravings or feeling guilty, now it is possible for vegetarians to find satisfying substitutes for all of their old favorites.
If you are a vegetarian purist, if the idea of eating anything that even resembles meat makes you queasy, then this blog is probably not for you. But if you are looking for more options to add to your vegetarian diet or you still find yourself drooling at the smell of bacon, even if you’re a meat eater looking for more healthy alternatives, you’ve come to the right place!
With the growing number of fake meat products available, we are given more choice than ever before. But not all of these veggie ‘meats’ stack up the same. Which ones taste the best? How do they compare to their real counterparts? What the heck are they made of, anyway? This blog will attempt to answer those questions and more. Stay tuned…!
